About CCB

Welcome to Laboratory for Circular Bioeconomy!

The Center for Circular Bioeconomy (CCB) focuses on development of leading-edge technologies related to upcycling low-value byproducts into higher value-added products to facilitate a circular bioeconomy.
Substantial use of energy and materials, mostly based on fossil fuels, has caused severe environmental pollution, like plastic and food waste, and climate change associated with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Natural and waste biomass, typically unused or abandoned, can be transformed into high valued products with advanced and innovative technologies, called “upcycling processes”. To facilitate a circular economy and improve sustainability, CCB looks at “bio-upcycilng” as key foundation of upcycling processes. We believe that upcycling biotechnology will contribute to the development of a carbon-neutral circular economy, the future direction of society.

CCB mainly works for biotechnologies related to resource recovery and upcycling processes mainly with biomass. CCB targets liquid and solid biomass, such as municipal solid waste, agriculture biomass, food industry waste, etc, which is converted to valuable products: green hydrogen, renewable natural gas, and biodegradable plastic by microorganisms.
