About LCB
Welcome to Laboratory for Circular Bioeconomy!
Laboratory for Circular Bioeconomy (LCB) focuses on the development of leading-edge technologies related to upcycling low-value byproducts into higher value-added products to facilitate a circular bioeconomy.
Substantial use of energy and materials, mostly based on fossil fuels, has caused severe environmental pollution, such as plastic and food waste, and climate change associated with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Natural and waste biomass, typically unused or abandoned, can be transformed into high-value products with advanced and innovative technologies, called “upcycling processes”. To facilitate a circular economy and improve sustainability, LCB looks at “bio-upcycilng” as the key foundation of upcycling processes. We believe that upcycling biotechnology will contribute to the development of a carbon-neutral circular economy, the future direction of society.

LCB mainly works for biotechnologies related to resource recovery and upcycling processes, mainly utilizing organic biomass. LCB targets liquid and solid biomass, such as municipal solid waste, agricultural biomass, food industry waste, etc., which is converted to valuable products: green hydrogen, renewable natural gas, and biodegradable plastic by microorganisms.
