KENTECH (KOREA INSTITUTE OF ENERGY TECHNOLOGY) SK CHO

Prof. CHO studied History & Philosophy of Science and Mathematics(MSc)) at King’s College of London, UK after having BSc at Seoul National University(Physics Education) and had a Ph.D degree in 2001 majoring History of Science at Seoul National University.

The title of her Ph. D thesis is , which is the first Ph.D paper dealing with the topic of science popularization. This pioneered a new field of study, called science culture & science popularization in Korea.

After joining KOFAC, a non-profit government organization as a specialist of science culture, she initiated and executed various new programmes under Science Korea Project, which was a national level movement for enhancing science culture and scientific literacy of all Korean. One of the successful program was issuing a science newspaper, by Joongang IlBo, which was the first science newspaper.

In 2006, she hosted the <9th International Conference on Public Communication of Science & Technology (PCST-9)>, which was the first time in Asia enhancing greatly the visibility of science communication. And she also contributed to set up an east-asian network for science culture by organising Joint Symposia among Korea, China and Japan at American Association for the Advancement of Science(AAAS) annual conference in USA. In 2017, as a vice direcor-general of Gwang-ju National Science Museum, she initiated the first co-exhibition of <2030 Future City> by 3 National Science Museums in Korea.

During last 30 years, she devoted herself to pioneer an area of in Korea through practical researches, publications and international networkings. Starting from , she published 13 books and translations to , which had the best book award from MCST. As Korea’s leading scholar in the field of science culture, she served as a scientific committee member for PCST network for 20 years, which is the biggest international society for science culture & communication. In 2018, she presented at the TV documentary of , the same title as the book she published.
