“Establishing a campus to serve as a global energy hub” The Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) will have a campus area of 400,000 square meters and a total floor area of 154,000 square meters, once construction is completed at a full scale. There is 154 square meters of space per student, which is much larger than other national institutes of science and technology in Korea. To meet the needs of a research-oriented university, its research and education facilities account for 80% of the total floor area, mainly for a project-based learning (PBL) environment, PBL lecture facilities (research, experiment, and lecture integrated zones) and residential colleges (RCs). The Korea Institute of Energy Technology will be constructed in four phases, with the first phase of core facilities opening in 2022. The 1-1-stage core facility building (5,224 square meters), which is expected to be ready for opening in 2022, is a 4-storey building with one basement level, housing lecture rooms, study cafes, libraries, and multipurpose halls. Besides, graduate school laboratories will use a portion (3,300 square meters) of KEPCO's Energy New Technology Research Institute with a lease arrangement in place. . A total opening area of 8,524 square meters for core facilities and rented buildings well exceeds the minimum school area requirement of 7,000 square meters (minimum of 20 square meters per student) required by the Act on the Korea Institute of Energy Technology. Most of campus facilities are scheduled to be completed by 2025. Once the campus buildings are completed, other facilities, including convention centers, will be added in the mid- to long-term.

The Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KENTECH) finds its home in Naju Innovation City. KEPCO affiliates, such as Korea Electric Power Corporation, KEPCO KPS Co., and KEPCO KDN Co., Ltd., as well as 16 public institutions, such as the Korea Power Exchange, Korea Internet & Security Agency, and Korea Post Information Center, moved their head offices to Naju, seeking to help employees and their families settle down in their new homes in Naju. Notably, as Naju has a high number of young workers, its charm as an exciting, novel city is growing with more restaurants and cafes opening to serve the tastes of young people. In this growing city, KENTECH is committed to creating an energetic industry-academic cluster through strategic alliances with local companies and research institutes, as well as to being a major academic partner in helping shape this Innovation City into a world-class energy research city by bringing in world-wide young and creative students, scholars, and researchers.
